2006 Skeeter Owners Tournament on Lake Fork, TX
8/06/2006
Well, as my teammate, former US Open Champ and recent Angler's Choice Pro Am winner, Kevin Wiggins from Las Vegas drives my new Chevy Silverado diesel crew cab from east Texas, he admires how the Allison transmission never downshifts going up hills and tells me “you don't even know the boat is there”. Reflectively I take a quick look back to make sure it really is still attached, then I take a few minutes while I'm free from driving responsibilities, to think back on the 13th annual, and our second, Skeeter Owners Tournament on beautiful Lake Fork. In a word, WOW!
Anyone familiar with Lake Fork knows that this lake is managed as a “trophy lake” with a “slot limit” of 16 - 24 inches, meaning that only fish of less than 16 inches (“unders”) or more than 24 inches (“overs”) can be in possession, thus weighed in. This tournament pays the top three heavy fish per hour to the lucky and/or skilled individuals that catch them as well as a number of other cash prizes for sub-categories including several for the top weights for youngsters, women, fish caught from antique (pre 1975) Skeeter boats, etc. This tournament blew away previous records for the Skeeter Owners tournament and (unofficially) for any recent June tournament on Lake Fork for the number of overs being weighed in - a total of 21 up to 12 pounds 9 ounces! The top prize was a Skeeter SX200 with a Yamaha VZ200 engine, TI tandem trailer and Minn-Kota trolling motor - very nice! In fact, there was at least one over weighed in each hour except for the last hour on Saturday, including many hours with two big fish - unbelievable!
While Kevin and I once again failed to catch a fish over 24 inches in length, or even an under heavy enough to have a chance for one of the three hourly checks, we had a great time nonetheless. Over the 4 ½ days we spent fishing the lake we caught 15 bass over 5 pounds including 5 over 7 pounds up to 7-13 along with numerous smaller fish. While most of our bigger fish came from 15 - 25 feet of water on jigs, plastics and swim baits, several others came shallow on frogs and flipped lizards. What a blast!
As in previous years Skeeter and their partners did an impressive job of providing numerous entertaining activities including a fishing tank for kids, numerous draw prizes, 50 rubber ducks scattered around the lake and redeemable for prizes, a live band, free bar-b-que on Saturday and Fish Fishburn emceeing the event as only he can. Additionally there were numerous Skeeter Pros hobnobbing with the crowd, signing autographs, posing for pictures with fans and of course swapping fish stories and demonstrating fish catching techniques. While neither Kevin nor I won squat, our buddies Roy Dale of Twin City and Mike Perry, owner of Mike's Boat Covers, had plenty of luck finding a rubber duckie that was worth over $100 of tackle and winning a trolling motor as a draw prize. Congrats chumps (yes, I'm jealous)!
One bit of advice, if you have any intention of fishing the 2007 Skeeter Owners tournament on Lake Fork, you better book a room now as many of the 1,400 plus fishermen book their rooms for next year before they ever leave the lake so most of the better rooms will be gone soon and they'll likely all be booked by January. Additionally, Skeeter is holding a second Owners tournament on Clarks Hill Reservoir, GA on October 13 - 16, 2006, so just in case I'd recommend that you book a room now for that one as well if you plan on trying to fish it.
